Roman Culture
Clothing-
The Roman clothing was designed to show the social status of the person who was wearing it. If it has marks on it, you could tell the person was a higher power. You knew if a woman was married because she wore a stola. Colored shoes and broad stripes meant that you were an emperer.
Food-
Rich people ate beef, pork, poultry, fowl, lamb and, fish. Ordinary citizens grow their own fruit and vegetables.The poor consisted mostly of grain which was cooked into porridge or bread.
It was in almost every aspect of life for the Roman citizens.Big feasts were held in honor of certain gods and would include spectacals like chariot races and gladiatoral fights.Religious practices are best remembered with grand temples,great festivals and christian persecution to the final acceptance of christianity within the Roman empire over the traditional pagan religious.
100-44 BC: Julius Caesar's historical significance-Civil wars break out between rival generals Marius and Sulla. Marius is supported by common people, while Sulla is supported by the aristocracy. Julius Caesar begin political career as a military tribune.
Trajan
Born- September 18th 53 AD.
Ruled- 98-117 AD
His major campaign as emperor were against the Dacians in 106 AD.
Nero
Born- 37 AD
Ruled- 54- 68 AD
He built a pleasure house for himself using the peoples money.
Augustus
Born- September 23 63 BC
Ruled- 27 BC- 14 AD
He was the first Roman emperor.
Decline & Fall-
The giant empire was split into Western and Eastern Empires in the early 300's AD, the West based in Rome (and later moving to Ravenna, Italy in 402 AD) while the East was based in Constantinople.
In 410 AD, Rome was sacked by the Visigoths led by a former Roman general, Alaric. Rome abandoned Britain that same year.
